Planning - Organising Shots

This is how I organised the shots for my music video and website, I went through all my footage and noted the numbers of the shots I thought were usable and gave them a name to make them identifiable.

These shots were then downloaded to be edited.

Music Video - First Draft Peer Response

My first draft with editing the footage for my music video, I did not include all of the narratives, and I don't plan to use the LED light shots at the end, they are only there as a place holder. This is a very rough first draft.

Note: there is a bit of just black at the end due to not having enough master shot, but this will be filled in with narrative shots later on.

I am aware that the master track has moments when the camera moves or isn't steady so I have watched the video and noted areas that need to be edited over with footage of narratives.

Planning - Narrative Outlines and Explanations

 Narrative 1:

  • Person afflicted by mental health issue is a mother who is apathetic towards life due to having to do housework all the time.
  • She is cheered up her children and is reminded that she does it all for them when they give her a flower. The place of boring house work becomes and place of family fun.
  • The son of the mother is wearing a Holister shirt appealing to the aspirational audience.
  • Using the stereotype of women being a housewife to convey the message of apathy quickly to the audience.
  • Represents of age with a middle aged women and two younger children.
Narrative 2:
  • Person afflicted by mental health issue is a young girl who has an eating disorder, shown by her aggressively shutting a fridge in disgust.
  • She goes to the park to take her mind of things where she sees a pretty flower and decides to go and buy an ice cream, with shots of her eating it.
  • Women are statistically more likely to have an eating disorder so I chose to represent a girl as having one to use stereotypes to convey that message quickly to the audience.
  • Representation of a young white female.
Narrative 3:
  • Person afflicted by mental health issue is a an old lady who suffers from loneliness, shown by her watching TV in her house by herself (with an intertextual reference to Silver Linings Playbook, as that is what is on the TV, which is a movie about a man trying to get better after being in a mental institution, so carries the meaning of trying to improve mental health over to my video).
  • She goes out into her garden where she sees all her lovely flowers and is cheered up by walking around the garden.
  • Using the stereotypes of old people as lonely and enjoying flowers to convey both messages quickly to an audience. Women are also more likely to outlive males so it makes sense to represent an older woman as lonely than a male.
  • Representations of age with an old lady.
Narrative 4:
  • People afflicted by mental health issues are two girls in a long distance relationship who have anxiety and possibly separation anxiety.
  • One of the girls gives the other flowers which is a symbol of there relationship and their lack of anxiety when together.
  • The two girls come from different areas with one girl coming from an urban area and the other from a rural area. (This narrative is an intertextual reference to the narrative of the animated film Your Name, where a boy from the city and a girl from the country swap bodies with each other and fall in love with each other.)
  • Representations of sexuality as the girls are in a Lesbian relationship and one of the girls is Asian so there is ethnic representation also.
Narrative 5:
  • Person afflicted by a mental health issue is a young man who attends therapy for an unapparent mental health issue.
  • The young adult man goes onto succeed by earning a degree thanks to his therapist after he is motivated to work hard.
  • Unconventional representation of a man with mental health issues especially a successful one. Goes against the stereotype of men not having mental health issues. Stereotype of females as caring and as more likely to be therapists with the therapist being a middle aged lady.
  • Representation of gender with a man.
Narrative 6:
  • Person afflicted by mental health issue is a teenage girl who suffers from depression and does not want to wake up and face the day and does so quite reluctantly.
  • The bedroom she wakes up in has lots of intertextual references to other bands through the use of posters on the bedroom wall.
  • This narrative adheres to Goodwin's theory the most due to having most of the shots matching the starting lyrics of the song, for example with an intertextual reference to Mamma Mia when shaving the leg and with the notion of looking with a shot in the mirror.
  • She reluctantly decides to go on a walk as she has nothing better to do and finds the joy of life when she notices flowers and smiles.
  • Representation gender and age with teenage girl, possibly sexuality shown through pride pin.
Narrative 7:
  • Person afflicted by mental health issue is a teenage boy who is addicted to social media and obsessed with likes and being popular, this appeals to a younger 16-25 audience who may have gone through a similar experience of wanting to be liked on social media.
  • He notices his dog next to some flowers or with flowers and decided to take him on a walk and get outside and leave his phone. He ends up enjoying the walk more and becoming happier once he has put down his phone for a bit.
  • Unconventional representation of a man with mental health issues, but doing it to show that mental health affects everyone.
  • Representation of gender and age with a teenage boy.

Planning - Interview Script for Website

INTERVIEWER: I’m here with Silver Lining, hi guys!

BAND: Hi!

INTERVIEWER: Could you guys just tell us a bit about why you paired up with the Flora Project for the release of the music video for your single ‘Daydream Believer’?

MILLY:          Well, you know we’ve all been through our own issues, and we just want to support a charity that we believe has a good cause.

EVAN: Yeah, because they specialise in supporting all types of people with loads of different mental health issues, young or old they can help anyone.

PURNOOR: And we just like flowers really. I joke but we are giving 50% of the money we make to the Flora Project, so watch the video!

This will be the rough script used for the 30 second audio visual element of my website and is an interview with the band about their link with the fictional mental health charity. These words will not be exactly the ones used in the video however I just thought it help my actors get a rough idea of what to say.

Planning - Charity Logo

I named the mental health charity 'Flora Project' due to the idea of flowers making you happy and decided to construct this logo. I chose a quite 'swirly' font to remind the audience of roots or stems of a flower and then the 'O' in 'Flora' is meant to be a flower head to symbolise that the flower is the basis of making people happy. The font is intentionally different from my bands logo font, to make it clear that the two aren't apart of  the same company and are just working together.

The rainbow aspect of the petals represents the various mental health conditions people can be afflicted by.

Obviously giving someone a flower is not going to solve a mental health problem, however the flowers represent finding the happiness in life so have chosen that.

The flower head is an intertextual reference to the Pokemon games, Pokemon Red and Blue. Specifically a reference to one of the 'Gym Leaders' 'Gym Badges' that similarly represents a flower as it is the 'Grass Gym'. I made this reference to try and gratify a niche audience who would recognise and bring the meaning of flowers and grass over to my logo.

UPDATE 27/7/22:
I decided to change the font to make it look less ugly and to go for a more simplistic design.

Planning - Flowers Storyline and Photos

After a day of shooting in London, I got this shot with one of my models and a 'flower wall'. I unfortunately didn't get a video with her and the flowers (although I can use these on my website) however it inspired me to revolve my video around the ideas of people becoming flowers after being given flowers.

I plan to use an ensemble cast of actors of different genders, ethnicities, ages and sexualities, to all be 'Jean' as it is a gender neutral name so it makes sense for everyone to be 'Jean'

I plan to have a shot(s) of each actor looking sad or tired, then have them being given a flower to cheer them up, and then a shot(s) of them looking happy or cheerful.

This links to my mental health charity link idea and brand of my band of thinking positive and allows me to use flowers as a central motif across all my products and to further the digitally convergent nature of my products.

I plan to call the link with the mental health charity, 'The Flora Project' and base the idea around that something as simple as giving someone a flower can cheer them up.

The use of multiple diverse 'Jeans' shows that mental health is a universal problem and the use of different flowers with each person shows that they each have a different possible mental health issue.

Planning - Camera Test and Close Up Shots

I experimented with the camera to see if a video would run for three minutes. Whilst shooting I also experimented with some possible close up camera shots I could have for when I film my actual video. So I got my friend to lip-sync to the song and dance a little to see how I could incorporate close up shots of my performers, and make them appear 'starlike'. I plan to use lots of close up shots to make my video conventional and adhere to Goodwins theory.

The shots at the start are very 'shakey' as originally I was unsure of what to film but became sure later on in the video.
