Narrative 1:
- Person afflicted by mental health issue is a mother who is apathetic towards life due to having to do housework all the time.
- She is cheered up her children and is reminded that she does it all for them when they give her a flower. The place of boring house work becomes and place of family fun.
- The son of the mother is wearing a Holister shirt appealing to the aspirational audience.
- Using the stereotype of women being a housewife to convey the message of apathy quickly to the audience.
- Represents of age with a middle aged women and two younger children.
Narrative 2:
- Person afflicted by mental health issue is a young girl who has an eating disorder, shown by her aggressively shutting a fridge in disgust.
- She goes to the park to take her mind of things where she sees a pretty flower and decides to go and buy an ice cream, with shots of her eating it.
- Women are statistically more likely to have an eating disorder so I chose to represent a girl as having one to use stereotypes to convey that message quickly to the audience.
- Representation of a young white female.
Narrative 3:
- Person afflicted by mental health issue is a an old lady who suffers from loneliness, shown by her watching TV in her house by herself (with an intertextual reference to Silver Linings Playbook, as that is what is on the TV, which is a movie about a man trying to get better after being in a mental institution, so carries the meaning of trying to improve mental health over to my video).
- She goes out into her garden where she sees all her lovely flowers and is cheered up by walking around the garden.
- Using the stereotypes of old people as lonely and enjoying flowers to convey both messages quickly to an audience. Women are also more likely to outlive males so it makes sense to represent an older woman as lonely than a male.
- Representations of age with an old lady.
Narrative 4:
- People afflicted by mental health issues are two girls in a long distance relationship who have anxiety and possibly separation anxiety.
- One of the girls gives the other flowers which is a symbol of there relationship and their lack of anxiety when together.
- The two girls come from different areas with one girl coming from an urban area and the other from a rural area. (This narrative is an intertextual reference to the narrative of the animated film Your Name, where a boy from the city and a girl from the country swap bodies with each other and fall in love with each other.)
- Representations of sexuality as the girls are in a Lesbian relationship and one of the girls is Asian so there is ethnic representation also.
Narrative 5:
- Person afflicted by a mental health issue is a young man who attends therapy for an unapparent mental health issue.
- The young adult man goes onto succeed by earning a degree thanks to his therapist after he is motivated to work hard.
- Unconventional representation of a man with mental health issues especially a successful one. Goes against the stereotype of men not having mental health issues. Stereotype of females as caring and as more likely to be therapists with the therapist being a middle aged lady.
- Representation of gender with a man.
Narrative 6:
- Person afflicted by mental health issue is a teenage girl who suffers from depression and does not want to wake up and face the day and does so quite reluctantly.
- The bedroom she wakes up in has lots of intertextual references to other bands through the use of posters on the bedroom wall.
- This narrative adheres to Goodwin's theory the most due to having most of the shots matching the starting lyrics of the song, for example with an intertextual reference to Mamma Mia when shaving the leg and with the notion of looking with a shot in the mirror.
- She reluctantly decides to go on a walk as she has nothing better to do and finds the joy of life when she notices flowers and smiles.
- Representation gender and age with teenage girl, possibly sexuality shown through pride pin.
Narrative 7:
- Person afflicted by mental health issue is a teenage boy who is addicted to social media and obsessed with likes and being popular, this appeals to a younger 16-25 audience who may have gone through a similar experience of wanting to be liked on social media.
- He notices his dog next to some flowers or with flowers and decided to take him on a walk and get outside and leave his phone. He ends up enjoying the walk more and becoming happier once he has put down his phone for a bit.
- Unconventional representation of a man with mental health issues, but doing it to show that mental health affects everyone.
- Representation of gender and age with a teenage boy.
